Level of menstrual knowledge between rural & urban girls (May)
According to various studies, there is a significant difference in the level of menstrual knowledge and practices between rural and urban school-going girls in India.
One study conducted by the Indian Journal of Community Medicine in 2015 found that only 24% of rural adolescent girls had knowledge about menstruation before attaining menarche compared to 46% of urban girls. The study also revealed that only 28% of rural girls used sanitary napkins compared to 65% of urban girls. Furthermore, a higher proportion of urban girls reported that their schools had provided them with information about menstruation compared to rural girls.
Another study conducted by the International Journal of Health Sciences and Research in 2019 also found that the level of menstrual knowledge among urban school-going girls was significantly higher than their rural counterparts.t
The study showed that only 39% of rural adolescent girls had prior knowledge about menstruation, while 79% of urban girls had prior knowledge. The study also revealed that the majority of rural girls used old clothes, rags, or dried leaves during menstruation instead of sanitary napkins.
Overall, these studies suggest that there is a significant difference in menstrual knowledge and practices between rural and urban school-going girls in India. This difference highlights the need for more education and awareness programs in rural areas to improve the health and well-being of adolescent girls.
